Who this is for: homeowners with a Generac PWRcell solar and battery system installed by Freedom Power. What it covers: a tour of the ecobee by Generac app — how to get into it, what's on the home screen, and the features that save you money and keep you running through an outage.

Your solar, your battery and your thermostat now live in one place — the ecobee by Generac app. This guide walks you through what you'll see and what each part does, so you can check on your system any time you like.

Getting into the app

  1. Watch for an email from Generac titled "Take Control with the ecobee by Generac app." It arrives once your system finishes commissioning. If you don't see it, check your spam folder.
  2. Open that email and tap Get Started. This is the important step — that button is what connects the app to your system.
  3. The link takes you to the App Store or Google Play to download the app, then finishes setting up your account automatically.

Already downloaded the app on your own and your system isn't showing up? Go back to the welcome email and tap Get Started — that's what links the two.

On Google Play the app is listed simply as "ecobee" by ecobee inc. — that's the right one.

Your home screen

This is what opens when you sign in — everything in your home on one screen, with the live energy flow at the top.

Live energy flow

An animated picture of power moving between your panels, battery, the grid and your home, each labelled with what it's doing right now. The same view appears on your ecobee thermostat.

Battery and solar

The battery shows both its current output and how full it is; the solar figure is what your panels are producing at this moment.

Comfort · Resilience · Security

Three tabs that filter the cards below, so you can look at just your comfort settings, just your backup power, or just your cameras.

Your devices

Scroll down for a card per device — your thermostat, battery, solar, and your generator if you have one.

Knowing how your system is doing

You don't have to read charts to know whether everything is working. Two features do that for you.

02-home-summary.png

Home Summary

A short daily write-up of what your system actually did — how your thermostat handled the weather, where your battery stands and what it has used, and whether your solar is up or down compared with recent days. It's written in plain language, and it tells you if anything needs your attention, so a quiet day never leaves you wondering.

03-ask-your-home.png

Ask your home

Ask a question in your own words — why your production is low today, what your battery is doing — or simply ask for what you want. In this example, asking to save more on the bill brings back a suggestion to change the PWRcell mode and lower the away temperature, which you can apply with a single tap.

Reports — tap the Reports tab for your history: solar production, home energy use, battery activity, grid usage and thermostat runtime, week over week and laid over the weather so you can see what was behind a change.

Saving money and getting through outages

These are the features that do the work in the background — worth knowing they're there.

04-bill-savings.png

Bill Savings mode

Learns your utility's rate structure and works your battery around it — charging when power is cheap and drawing on stored energy when it isn't. It only helps if you're on a time-of-use rate. Your system starts in Self Supply, and you can switch it on in your device settings. Your current mode shows at the top of the home screen.

05-outage-guard.png

Outage Guard

Watches the forecast and tops your battery up ahead of a storm, so you're ready before the power goes out. You'll get a notification and a banner on your home screen telling you what's coming and how charged you are. If you'd rather not hold the charge for a particular storm, you can opt out of it.

PWRmanager

Lets you turn individual circuits on or off from your phone — up to 12 of them. When you're running on battery, the things you've marked non-essential switch off on their own to make your backup last longer, and the top of the screen shows hours remaining.

Comfort, security, and getting help

The same app looks after the rest of your ecobee devices too.
